Urban Climatology & Sustainable Urban Development

Dr. Iain D. Stewart holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada.  He is currently a Sessional Lecturer at UBC and a Research Fellow of the Global Cities Institute in Toronto.  A specialist in urban climatology, Iain is internationally renowned for his work on the urban heat island from both historical and scientific perspectives.  A significant output of his work is the Local Climate Zone (LCZ) classification system, which is used worldwide as a spatial and analytical framework for urban climate studies.  Iain is engaged with supporting researchers around the world and is highly regarded for his innovative, holistic, and rigorous approach to science.  He is a 2021 recipient of the prestigious Timothy Oke Award for Original Research in Urban Climatology, and a two-time recipient of the William P. Lowry Methodology Award, given by the International Association for Urban Climate.  Iain is co-author of the text The Urban Heat Island - A Guidebook (Elsevier), and is Associate Editor for the journal Urban Climate.
